The Business Leaders’
Sustainability Journey

The five stages of a typical sustainability journey.

At each stage, organisations experience different mindsets, take different actions, and communicate differently. More importantly, at each stage, there are distinct challenges and solutions that can help them build momentum and move forward confidently.

Stage 1

Emerging
Awareness

We don’t know what we don’t know

At this early stage, sustainability is not yet a strategic priority. Leaders may feel mild discomfort or a sense that something needs to change, but awareness is low, and efforts are fragmented.

Mindset

Leaders experience unease, with a growing realisation that sustainability matters but little clarity on what it means for their business.

Actions

Isolated, tactical initiatives and projects begin to emerge, often led by junior staff without clear alignment to strategy.

Communication

The organisation highlights individual activities, but messaging is reactive and inconsistent, and not close to contributing commercially.

Not Sustainable Solution

Here the priority is to establish and understand the business and its direction. We deliver introductory workshops and leadership sessions to build foundational knowledge, align leadership teams, identify key business drivers, and define early priorities. These interventions help organisations move from confusion to clarity, and establish ownership at senior levels.

Stage 2

Developing confidence

What else do we need to know and do?

The organisation becomes aware of gaps in its approach and starts seeking clarity. Leaders feel reassured by initial progress but recognise the need for more strategy, structure and purpose.

Mindset

Comfort grows from taking some action, but there’s awareness the business isn’t yet meeting expectations and could do more.

Actions

Short-term, reactive plans meet immediate demands, often for customers, investors or regulators, but still lack cohesion.

Communication

Messaging highlights the breadth of activity, giving the company more to promote and talk about: “Look at everything we’re doing.”

Not Sustainable Solution

At this stage, organisations can move beyond reactive measures. We provide targeted workshops, stakeholder mapping, and risk-and-opportunity assessments to uncover what’s material, identify gaps, and begin shaping a coherent strategy. The outcome is clarity about where to focus, a stronger narrative, and a roadmap for structured progress.

Stage 3

Structured Progress

Great progress – what comes next?

By this stage, progress is measurable, strategy aligned, and sustainability begins to shape decisions, partnerships, and the wider narrative.

Mindset

Leaders feel positive about
their achievements so far and are strongly motivated to continue progressing further.

Actions

Stakeholder engagement becomes systematic; data and metrics inform decisions; sustainability is built into operational planning.

Communication

The narrative becomes
more balanced: “We have a plan, a vision and we’re making progress, join us.”

Not Sustainable support

At this stage, organisations are ready for in-depth strategic planning and integration support. We deliver tailored planning workshops, scenario analysis, and leadership coaching to refine goals, set measurable targets, and embed sustainability into decision-making processes. This helps elevate sustainability from a project to a business-wide value driver.

Stage 4

StRATEGIC
INTEGRATION

Let’s do this!

The organisation has a clear vision, strong strategy, and a sense of purpose. Sustainability is embedded in culture and positioned as an opportunity for growth and innovation.

Mindset

Leaders are increasingly confident and excited about the opportunity for sustainability to become a key business differentiator.

Actions

Long-term plans are implemented, innovation initiatives are launched, and partnerships with customers, suppliers, and stakeholders evolve.

Communication

Messaging signals confidence
and an ambitious outlook:
“We know where we’re going,
and we’re proud of it.”

Not Sustainable support

We support organisations at this stage with strategic mentoring, advanced stakeholder engagement, innovation planning, and industry positioning workshops. Our role is to maintain momentum, uncover emerging opportunities, and ensure the business stays ahead of stakeholder and regulatory expectations while delivering value to customers.

Stage 5

Sustainability
Leadership

We’re leading this in our market!

At this stage, the organisation is recognised as a sustainability leader, shaping the agenda within its industry and setting benchmarks for others.

Mindset

Leaders see sustainability as integral to their identity and future, and actively advocate beyond their own business.

Actions

The business shapes peer and partner actions, drives thought leadership, and commits to bold sustainability goals.

Communication

The narrative becomes
inspiring and aspirational:
“This is our journey and we are leading the way.”

Not Sustainable support

At this stage, businesses benefit from ongoing strategic advisory, thought leadership development, and advocacy support. We offer tailored, retainer-based relationships that allow organisations to maintain and expand their leadership position, amplify their voice, and continue shaping the future of sustainability in their sector.
